You have 15 business days from the date the determination was mailed to file a Louisiana unemployment appeal — the clock runs from the date on the letter, not the day you read it. Many first denials are overturned at the hearing, usually on the separation question (misconduct or quit), and the hearing is the one place both sides are under oath.
This guide gives the deadline, how to file, what the hearing is like, what evidence wins, and what happens to your benefits while you wait. Figures are from the United States Department of Labor’s state-law tables effective January 1, 2026, read October 2026; confirm the current amount with Louisiana Workforce Commission before you rely on it.

Not sure how many days you have left in Louisiana?
How to File a Louisiana Unemployment Appeal
Louisiana accepts first-level appeals online through the claimant’s HiRE account at louisianaworks.net/HIRE, which the agency says is the fastest option. Claimants can also fill in the “I Appeal” section on the determination and return it by email ([email protected]), fax (1-225-346-6077) or mail (LWC Appeals Tribunal, P.O. Box 94094, Baton Rouge, LA 70804-9094). Most claimants include a copy of the determination and the reason they disagree.
If no acknowledgement letter arrives within 10 days, call the Appeals Clerk of Court at 1-800-256-8023. The appeals page is https://www.laworks.net/UnemploymentInsurance/UI_MainMenu.asp.
What a Louisiana Unemployment Appeal Hearing Is Like
Most first-level hearings are recorded phone or video hearings of 30-60 minutes. It is run by Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) of the LWC Appeals Tribunal. The statute uses the older title “appeal referee” (La. R.S. 23:1629).; you and the employer each testify, answer the officer’s questions and can question each other’s witnesses. Witnesses can testify at the telephone hearing.
Either party can ask the judge in writing to subpoena a witness or documents. The request has to give the witness’s name and home address and say exactly what the testimony or documents will prove, and it must be received at least 3 business days before the hearing.
Evidence That Wins a Louisiana Unemployment Appeal
- A copy of the determination and any separation notice or termination letter
- A written timeline of dates, warnings and the final day of work
- Pay stubs, time cards, schedules and attendance records
- Emails, texts or written policies that support your account
- Doctor’s statements for health-related separations
- Ask for the agency’s file in writing at least 3 business days before the hearing
Send every document to the hearing office and the employer before the hearing by the method the notice specifies; the officer can only consider what is in the record.
Your Benefits While the Louisiana unemployment appeal Is Pending
Keep filing every weekly claim during the appeal. If you win, those weeks are paid; weeks you did not claim are gone. If the employer appeals a decision in your favor, you are usually paid in the meantime and may have to repay only if you lose. LWC says the ALJ’s written decision is usually mailed about 3 days after the hearing.
Hearings are generally held about 3 to 4 weeks after filing, so most claimants can expect a first-level decision roughly a month after they appeal. Confirm timing with the Appeals Clerk of Court.
Louisiana Unemployment Appeal: The Second Level and the Courts
The second level is the Louisiana Board of Review. It may affirm, modify or reverse the ALJ’s findings using the evidence already in the record, or it may order more evidence to be taken, which often means sending the case back for another hearing (La. R.S. 23:1630; LAC 40:IV.125). New evidence is generally not accepted unless the Board directs it.
The statute gives the Board 60 days to decide after it receives an appeal. The Board’s decision can be reviewed by filing a petition in the state district court for the parish where the claimant lives, within 15 days of the date the Board’s decision was mailed (La. R.S. 23:1634; R.S. 23:1630).

The court reviews only questions of law, and the Board’s findings of fact stand if supported by sufficient evidence. Claimants are exempt from court costs (La. R.S. 23:1692).
Missing the Louisiana Unemployment Appeal Deadline, and Employer Appeals
A late appeal is accepted only for good cause — hospitalization, a wrong address on file, a determination that never arrived — and you must file it as soon as the cause ends.

Free help may be available through Southeast Louisiana Legal Services (slls.org) and the Louisiana LawHelp directory (louisianalawhelp.org), which lists the regional legal aid offices. Claimants do not pay court costs on a court appeal (La. R.S. 23:1692).
Denied and not sure what to do next?
Many first denials are overturned at the hearing. Free legal aid offices in Louisiana represent claimants at unemployment hearings at no cost — ask early, because the deadline does not wait. Find your nearest office through Legal Services Corporation.
If the person who filed the appeal does not answer or is unavailable within 15 minutes of the scheduled hearing time, the ALJ may dismiss the appeal, and the original determination then becomes final. A request to reopen, showing good cause, must be made within 7 days of the dismissal’s mailing date. The other option is an appeal to the Board of Review (LWC Revised Rules).
