How Louisiana Unemployment Benefits Are Calculated
Louisiana adds up your wages from all four quarters of the base period, averages them, and pays one twenty-fifth (1/25) of that quarterly average as the weekly amount. Any amount that is not a whole dollar is rounded down to the next lowest dollar (R.S. 23:1592(A)). The result can also be adjusted by percentage factors that R.S. 23:1474 ties to the trust-fund balance. Louisiana does not add a dependents’ allowance.
$1,200 in base-period wages, wages in two quarters, and 1.5 times the high quarter.
Louisiana Unemployment Benefits: A Worked Example
Suppose a worker earned 5000 in each of the four base-period quarters, for 20000 in total. The quarterly average is 5000, and 5000 divided by 25 comes to a weekly amount of 200, before any statutory cap or trust-fund adjustment. This is only an illustration of the formula and not anyone’s actual award. Confirm your amount on the monetary determination the state mails you.
The estimate is illustrative; Louisiana Workforce Commission computes the official amount from your wage records.
How Long Louisiana Unemployment Benefits Last
Regular Louisiana unemployment benefits run up to 12-20 weeks in a benefit year. The most recent DOL notice found (April 16, 2026) reported no state triggered “on” for Extended Benefits, so most claimants in Louisiana receive regular state benefits only. A separate state rule (R.S. 23:1606, effective January 1, 2025) allows up to 8 additional weeks for claimants in approved training who start before regular benefits run out.
Confirm the current status with LWC. The first eligible week is a waiting week: you file for it but it is not paid.
Working Part-Time While Claiming Louisiana Unemployment Benefits
You can earn up to half of your weekly benefit amount without any reduction, and LWC subtracts earnings above that half dollar for dollar.
If your earnings for a week equal or exceed your weekly benefit amount, no benefit is paid for that week. the lesser of 1/2 the weekly benefit amount or $50 Report every dollar on the weekly claim — unreported earnings are the most common route to an overpayment.
LWC says pensions, accrued vacation, holiday pay, severance or dismissal pay, and wages in lieu of notice are deducted from the weekly amount. Under R.S. 23:1595, if a base-period employer pays severance that, prorated weekly, equals or exceeds your weekly benefit amount, your total entitlement is cut by one week for each week of severance, but never below one week.

When and How Louisiana Unemployment Benefits Are Paid
LWC says to allow at least 21 days (3 weeks) after you file your first weekly certification for a determination, because it reviews your wages, identity and reason for separation first. Your first weekly claim is due the Sunday right after you file. If you file on a Friday or Saturday, the first weekly claim is made the following Tuesday through Friday.
After approval, payment is generally sent 3–4 days after each weekly claim. You choose direct deposit or a U.S. Bank debit card when you file your claim in HiRE. LWC strongly encourages direct deposit because a new debit card can take up to 10 days to be processed and mailed.
You can add or change banking details under “Update Banking Information” in HiRE (ID.me verification is required), and LWC says to allow 2 business days for a change to take effect. Benefit weeks run Sunday through Saturday, and you claim the week that just ended, usually on Sunday or Monday, through HiRE (louisianaworks.net/HIRE) or by phone at 1-866-783-5567.
If you miss Sunday or Monday, you may file on another day of that same week. LWC states that you cannot be paid for any week you do not claim. You must report gross earnings for the week you worked, even if you have not been paid yet.
Taxes on Louisiana Unemployment Benefits
Unemployment benefits are taxable federal income. Louisiana income tax starts from federal adjusted gross income, so the benefits are generally taxable for the state too. You may elect to have 10 percent withheld for federal tax, and you can change that choice once per benefit year by notifying LWC in writing. LWC does not withhold Louisiana state income tax.
A Form 1099-G is issued at the end of January and is also available in HiRE.
Your claim goes inactive after 3 or more consecutive weeks of reported gross wages equal to or greater than your weekly benefit amount. You can reactivate it in HiRE and resume weekly claims the following Sunday. If you were disqualified for quitting, misconduct or refusing suitable work, the state generally requires wages of 10 times your weekly benefit amount before benefits can resume.
Next step: the amount only matters if you qualify. Our Louisiana eligibility guide covers the fired-vs-quit rules and the work-search count, and the application guide walks through filing.
